Intro To Islamic Calligraphy Workshop

  • 46903 Sugarland Rd Sterling, VA 20164 USA (map)

Dive into the world of Islamic Calligraphy!  Immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of the Arabic script and join us in an afternoon of awe-inspiring artistry in workshops led by expert calligrapher Şaban Karipek!

Two workshops are offered, the first is All Ages (12+ from 1:45 to 3:15) and the second for Adults (Ages 18+ from 3:45 to 5:15).  Each session will cover the history, evolution, tools, and various styles of Islamic Calligraphy with demonstrations by Şaban Karipek.  Br. Karipek will then provide hands-on guidance for you to craft your own piece for your home.  A Q&A session will take place should there be extra time.  All materials (pens, papers, and ink) will be provided and are fully covered by the ticket cost.  Attendees can keep their pens and extra ink after the workshop to further improve their skills!

These workshops are targeted at beginners.  If you have little to no practical experience with calligraphy or simply want to learn about the history of the craft, this is the event for you!

Following both workshops at 5:45, attendees will be allowed to commission and take home popular Islamic phrases or their names in calligraphy and watch as Br. Karipek composes the script right in front of them!  Those who do not know how to compose their names in Arabic can consult on-location volunteers on how to most accurately spell their names in the Arabic script. Custom calligraphy commissions will only be available to purchase in-person at 5:45.  You do not need to attend a workshop to buy a calligraphy commission.

Şaban Karipek is a masterful calligrapher with 35+ years of experience whose expertise has led him to design the interiors of a multitude of masjids along the East Coast. He was trained by renowned Islamic calligraphers in Turkey and received an Ijazah (accredited certificate) in traditional Islamic Calligraphy. He is dedicated to reviving the civilizational legacy through the transformative power of Islamic art in modern spaces.
