Islam in Popular Media: The Stanger & The Wayfarer

  • 46903 Sugarland Rd Sterling, VA 20164 USA (map)

Is Neo a Sufi? Who is the Morphius of your life? What is the real red pill?

Find out the answer to these questions and more in the inaugural session of “Islam in Popular Media”. This month will cover the sci-fi classic The Matrix. Led by Imam Abdul-Malik Merchant, the lecture and subsequent question-based group discussion will analyze The Matrix through an Islamic lens, finding parallels between Neo’s awakening and journey within the simulation and our own Islamic awakening and journey in the Dunya.

It’s strongly recommended that attendees have watched the first Matrix film sometime before attending. This discussion relies on basic knowledge of the Matrix’s plot and will contain heavy spoilers.

Imam Abdul-Malik Merchant completed his undergraduate program in Islamic Studies — specializing in Islamic culture from Umm al-Qura University in Makkah, Saudi Arabia — and his Master of Theological Studies at Boston University’s School of Theology, concentrating on practical theology. Imam Merchant currently serves as the Lead Chaplain in the ADAMS Center’s office of the Imams.
