It’s the Summer of Ummatea and SESSION TWO OF THE UMMATEA SUMMER SERIES HAPPENING FRIDAY. Who am I? Who am I not? The questions thousands of characters have asked themselves in classic novels or cinematic films. It is at the center of the human experience, to know one’s own self, and to not lose that knowledge. After all, how can WE be anything (a believer, a friend, a child, a sibling, a parent, a spouse, a community contributor) if we don’t know who WE are? How can someone improve themselves if they don’t know who they are, or who their self even is? In a world of distractions and dissonance, our ability to look inward and find direction and grounding is paramount to our survival, both materially and metaphysically. We have to sift through counter-narratives about our identities to reconstruct one that leaves us free of dissonance. Who are we? Who are you? Together, in conversation with Imam Mohamed Magid and Ustadha Kouthar Muttardy we will take a deep dive into the Qur’anic ocean to find our own reflections. Join us for a summer series of UmmaTea sessions, exploring the answer to the existential reflection: who am I? With the Qur’an as our guide, each session will begin with a tadabbur (reflection) exercise where we practice contemplating on an ayah from the Qur’an. The ayah will frame our discussion, where we will explore who we are, and how we can find ourselves. UmmaTea is a community space where we enjoy fresh chai, refreshments, and blessed company. Bring a friend or two, come alone, or as a newcomer, as all are welcome. Please be advised that this is a program for those 21+, and that children will be required to remain with their parents at all times. Community members over 40 will be asked to make a small contribution to allow us to keep this program free for young adults and young professionals.
